Although Barcelona reportedly had reached an agreement with German defender Jonathan Tah, they ultimately failed to sign him due to Ronald Araujo remaining at the club. However, no one expects Iñigo Martínez to leave, which creates further uncertainty at the position.

Barcelona does not yet appear fully confident in Araujo as a long-term partner for Paulo Kubalci, as the Uruguayan has been playing consistently for two years. Andreas Christensen’s contract expires next summer, while Jules Kounde and Eric García have both been performing well at right-back recently. According to MD, while Barcelona does not currently have the funds to sign the German defender, they are considering several options in case they are able and feel the need to do so next summer.

Cheaper Alternatives in Barcelona’s Defense

In recent months, Barcelona has been linked with Palmeiras’ rising star Luis Benedetti, a Brazilian defender believed to be heading to Europe soon. However, both Arsenal and Napoli are interested in the 19-year-old and could create competition. Another option that may receive less attention is Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Berardo. Another talented young Brazilian, Berardo has lost out due to the presence of William Pacho and Marquinhos.

The name circled in red that could be considered a possible option is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Real Madrid is monitoring him, and Liverpool has also attempted to sign him, but considering the England international will arrive as a free agent next summer, he presents a similar opportunity for the Catalan club as Tah.

Two Other High-Priced Players

Another center-back frequently linked with Barcelona is Nottingham Forest’s Murillo. The 23-year-old is now a member of the Brazilian national team and has attracted interest from numerous top clubs, but Nottingham Forest is unlikely to sell him for a low price.

Similarly, Sporting Lisbon defender Gonzalo Ignacio is also on the radar of director of football Deco. Deco recently met with Ignacio’s agent. His contract expires in 2027, meaning the Portuguese giants may consider selling him next summer.
