Barcelona Removes Marc-André ter Stegen’s No. 1 Shirt – omyzd

Barcelona has seen some notable changes within the squad, with several major numbering changes taking place over the past 24 hours, involving both Marc-André ter Stegen and Paulo Kubalci.

In the interim, it’s all but confirmed that Iñigo Martínez will leave Barcelona to join Saudi Pro League side Al Nasr, vacating the No. 5 jersey at Camp Nou. The jersey was quickly snapped up by his former center-back partner.

Barcelona cannot assign the number 1 jersey to García until he completes his registration—which is expected to take place after Martinez officially leaves the club. The same is true for Wojciech Szczesny, who is also a candidate for the number 1 jersey, although he is more likely to wear number 12 or last season’s number 25.

Ter Stegen held the number 1 jersey for many years at Barcelona, but has lost the position as his tenure as the club’s starting goalkeeper draws to a close. He is still expected to be given a number, though it will likely be one of the aforementioned 12 or 25, or perhaps even 13, which will become vacant when Inaki Pena inevitably leaves later this summer.

According to the club’s manager, La Liga has registered Kubalci as Barcelona’s new No. 5 jersey, removing him from the No. 2 jersey he’s worn since 2024. The number is now available to anyone who wants it, with Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen among the likely candidates.

Marc-André ter Stegen’s status at Barcelona has further declined.

Interestingly, La Liga has also confirmed that ter Stegen is no longer Barcelona’s number one goalkeeper—unsurprising given his poor reputation at Barca. Therefore, Juan García, who is set to become Hansi Flick’s starting goalkeeper next season, has the opportunity to replace the Germany international.
