omyzd – Following their impressive performance at the Club World Cup, Real Madrid resumed pre-season preparations earlier this week with a shortened schedule. They opened their season with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Segunda Division side Leganés at Valdebebas on Friday.

Dean Huissen, Eder Militao, Brahim Díaz, and young midfielder Thiago Pitachi scored for Xabi Alonso’s side, who will travel to Austria for their only official pre-season friendly against WSG Tirol on Tuesday evening.

It’s safe to say the past two years have been extremely difficult for Militao. He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 2023-24 season opener against Athletic Bilbao approximately 24 months ago. After battling hard, he suffered a similar injury to his other knee last November, meaning another lengthy layoff.

Militão returned to action in the Club World Cup semi-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain last month, hoping his injury problems are a thing of the past. Alonso hopes so, as he plans to make the 27-year-old a key player for his team in the 2025-26 season and beyond. He will have the opportunity to become a regular starter alongside Huysen, though he will be competing with Antonio Rudiger and Raúl Asensio for that position.

Militão is under pressure to return to his best form and, more importantly, stay healthy. If he endures another difficult season at Real Madrid, his long-term future at the Bernabéu will undoubtedly be called into question.

Video footage of the Leganés match has been released, and the highlight is undoubtedly Militao’s goal—which he uploaded to social media. The Brazilian defender fired a spectacular shot from inside his own half, which sailed past the Leganés goalkeeper and into the net.

The 2025-26 season is crucial for Militao’s future at Real Madrid.
